Home Elevators for Multigenerational Families

Southern California has one of the highest shares of multigenerational households in the country. Grandparents, parents and children under one roof is a long tradition in many families and a practical response to housing costs for others. It works best when the house works for everyone.

The usual obstacle

Most family homes here have the bedrooms upstairs. A grandparent who cannot manage the stairs ends up in a converted den, or isolated from part of family life.

What an elevator makes possible

  • Grandparents can have a proper bedroom upstairs, or reach the family room downstairs, without help
  • Parents can move laundry, luggage and sleeping toddlers between floors
  • A relative recovering from surgery is not confined to one level
  • The home will suit the next generation of the family as well

Planning it

  • Location. Near the kitchen and garage entry, opening onto a hall on each floor.
  • Size. Large enough for a wheelchair and a helper if there is any chance of needing it.
  • Type. A vacuum elevator for a finished home, a traditional elevator if you are remodeling.
  • Controls. Simple buttons, with a key lock if young children are in the house.

Building an addition or ADU?

If you are adding a second story or a unit for parents, include the elevator in the plans. It costs far less than adding one later.

Safety with children

Modern elevators have interlocked doors and sensors. Set clear rules, and use the key switch.

A more modest alternative

If one family member needs help and can sit and stand comfortably, a stair lift is quicker and less costly.
